A Leader

 A few days back, while I was sitting in the balcony gathering some thoughts for my next blog. I looked up and saw a flock of birds flying in a certain direction. All the birds were in a line but one of the birds kept distracting me. Sometimes it flew beside the flock and sometimes behind them. I observed the bird and then realized that it was the leader of the birds and how did I presume it??? Well I observed the birds and noted that whenever the flock was slow it would be behind them to increase their pace and it was moving here and there to make sure no one is left behind. But mark my words for those 10-15 minutes that I watched the flock never did it lead/ fly ahead of the flock. This is the most prestigious qualities of a leader. A leader will never lead the path but show you how to walk and which path to follow. According to John Maxwell, “ A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.”

 

How to be a leader???

 

The actual quality of a leader is not to lead but to guide. An ideal group leader is one who never gives you the speech you have to deliver but guides you how to speak and also hands over to you the microphone. A leader is not meant to walk ahead but to walk side-by-side and help all those who are unable to catch up. Being a leader, if any one of the members has lost hope it’s your duty to be like a wall which can help them stand again. As a leader, if someone loses their voice you have to be the microphone for them. If someone makes a mistake in public then you need to cover up for them to save them from embarrassment and also you will have to help them improve and avoid the mistakes next time. A leader is like a vision and where there is no vision, the people perish. You need to understand that the group’s achievements are the efforts of every single member of the group and you are just one of them but the downfall of the group will indicate that your efforts are somewhat not up to the mark. If there is a lack of cooperation from the group then there is lack of efforts from your side. Understand that leadership qualities will take time, efforts and experience to develop but it is expected of you to develop the qualities as early as you can because everyone will get time but not the leader. If the group chooses the leader through mutual voting then everyone needs to respect each others’ opinion.

 

The necessary traits for a leader:

 

·         Trust- you need to trust each others’ opinion and also you have to not lose your temper.

 

·         Understanding- as Benjamin Disraeli once said, “a leader follows the people.” you need to understand the speed and quality of the work every group member presents. You need to understand each other in order to help and grow together.

 

·         Active participation- you need to be active enough to motivate others as well as make plans and schedules for the whole group.

 

·         Patience- remember that no matter how difficult the situation is you cannot lose your calm. If you lose your temper it will surely lead to lack of cooperation in the group.

 

·         Oration- you require oration skills as you will lose communication if you lack oration skills which will lead to further problems.

 

·         Confidence- even if you are not sure about your decision, you cannot lack confidence because it will make the whole group nervous. Be confident while communicating with others because you represent the whole group.

 

·         Decision making- you need quick decision making skills so as to combat any unwanted situations.

 

·         Expressiveness- you need to be expressive in order to convey your thoughts and ideas with everyone.

 

·         Creativity- creative thinking and writing skills are a must for a leader because to accomplish some tasks you need to think uniquely. Sometimes to overcome odds you also need to think out of the box.

 

·         Un-biasness- you cannot show biasness towards any member may it be your friend, relative or enemy.

 

·         The quality to guide- being a leader you don’t have to always lead but guide everyone in the best possible way you can.

 

The mentioned qualities will take both time and efforts but I believe you can surely do it because no one is born a leader, but some are made a leader.

There is a leader in everyone and how you polish your qualities will determine how better a leader you can become.
